Thursday 29 August: Bamburgh revisited and Flodden Field

We loved Bamburgh so much that we decided to return.  We hadn’t had time for Graeme to visit Flodden Field earlier in the week so he went there whilst the rest of us went on Bamburgh beach and, once again, enjoyed a lovely walk, splashing in the sea for Harris and lots of digging and dam building for Andrew and James.

After a snack in the beach café we walked up to the beautiful cricket/croquet pitch and met up with Graeme in the Lord Crewe – quite an achievement as the mobile phone signal is virtually non-existent.

We then split up again and Graeme and Elizabeth went to the Grace Darling museum – a small but beautiful place – and then it was and ice cream before returning to the house.

Estimates vary, but it seems that around 20,000 men died here on 9 September 1513 when the Scots and the English clashed just south of the border between the two countries. The Scottish king, James IV died in battle and the English, a smaller force proved victorious.

Said to be the smallest visitor centre in the world.
