Monday 26 August: Beamish

Chris and Sarah were leaving us today, so we had decided to go to Beamish which was on their way home. Elizabeth and Graeme had last been there in 1988 so knew it would have changed a lot.

We had pre-booked our tickets so once we were parked got in reasonably quickly. It was August Bank holiday and there were a lot of visitors and lots of dogs.

You can read about Beamish here - and here and you can read about the museum's founder, Frank Atkinson here.

We got on the tram to the 1940s Farm and then to the Colliery Village where we joined the massive queue for fish and chips but it was so worth it. They were delicious.

Then it was on the bus to the 1950s town and the 1900s town. After a good walk round including the Co-op, pub, travel agents and the fairground we said our goodbyes to the Deaves, wandered about a bit more before catching the double decker bus back to the exit and home.

The oldest of the casualties was 66 and the youngest just 14

Sunday 25 August

The day started with bacon and sausage cobs and then we set off for Bamburgh. We parked near the magnificent castle and walked down to the enormous beach. Harris and Pepper were in their element running around on the beach and James had fun. Andrew and Harris bravely went in the sea even though it was very bracing

We then walked back up for a coffee and were lucky to come across a Macmillan cancer charity coffee morning with the most amazing array of tasty treats. James discovered the delights of cheese scones and also had a win on the tombola. A good time was had by all.  It was then time in the play area for James, window shopping for Catherine, Elizabeth, Sarah and Chris whilst Graeme and Harris sat by the beautiful cricket ground watching the locals play croquet.

We had intended to have a look in Seahouses on the way home, but it was so busy we decided to go back to the house and chill and to come back to Seahouses another day.

Bamburgh Castle, a magnificent intact fortress which dominates the local landscape.

The beach at Bamburgh, recently voted by the British public - once again - as Britain's best beach.

Friday 30 August: Beamish revisited and home

Beamish is huge and we weren’t able to do everything we wanted to on Monday.  Our entrance fee also gave us an annual pass so we decided to ...
